In 2014, Southwestern NC RC&D saw the need in this area for assistance in agriculture and marketing. Based on strong local recommendation, the RC&D was able to connect with Christina Newhouse, who has now held the position of Agriculture and High Tunnel Specialist for four years.

Newhouse, outside of the RC&D, is a small farmer herself. On her small farm, she produces microgreens as well as ginger and sells eggs. Newhouse was hired by the RC&D through a grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina to bring a new agricultural element to the organization. During the four years Newhouse has been working with the RC&D, she has accomplished many great things like helping farms get GAP certified (Good Agricultural Practices), performed numerous farm assessments, taught workshops, and educated area farmers on the benefits of high tunnel production. “My job is to serve as a resource connector for farmers who may not know all the possible grants or help they are capable of receiving,” said Newhouse. “I love being able to help these farmers and their farms because agriculture is such a huge part of our world today.”

Newhouse received an award at Southwestern NC RC&D’s Council meeting on July 27, 2017 honoring her hard work and dedication to the RC&D Council over the past four years. “Christina is making a difference with farmers, “said Lynn Sprague, Executive Director of Southwestern NC RC&D Council. “She really helps these farmers by working with them one on one at their farms as well as across the kitchen table.”

Newhouse was clearly very surprised and honored with such an award. “I was so surprised when I was called up to receive this award,” said Newhouse. “It was not only an honor, but it really serves as great motivation to keep on going down this same path to keep making a difference in agriculture in Western North Carolina.”

Congratulations, Christina! Thank you for everything you do for our organization. We look forward to seeing everything else you accomplish for years to come in the RC&D.
